Lindex interview with Ashley Graham
How has it been working with Lindex on this shoot?
It was an incredibly powerful shoot because of the diverse group of women chosen for the campaign. There was so much girl power on set!
Lindex have been supporting the fight against breast cancer for many years, what does Breast Cancer Awareness mean to you?
I have people close to my family and I that have breast cancer and have fought it. This is a cause that needs attention, and I believe that since there is strength in numbers, we can fight this together.
Which is your favourite piece or outfit from Lindex Pink Collection?
I really liked the maroon two-piece set with the jumper and the dress.
Which is your favourite piece or outfit from Lindex Fall Fashion Heroes campaign collection?
My favorite is the long sleeve ribbed bodycon dress. It was fire!
How do you see that the fashion world is embracing diversity at the moment?
We’re living in the body diversity era. We’re seeing more diversity in media, on the pages and covers of magazines, and in Hollywood. More people are looking for advertisers to show diversity in their campaigns. We’ve come a long way, but we still have more progress to make.
How has the landscape for plus size fashion changed throughout the years?
In my opinion, plus size fashion in the past wasn’t given as much attention as straight size fashion. There weren’t as many clothing options for curvy women. Now many retailers are listening to all of their customers and offering high quality designs in larger sizes. No matter your size, you should have access to fashion that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
What does being a role model and a body activist mean to you?
I’ve been modeling for 16 years, and I now have this platform I can use to create change and be the voice of so many young girls and women who need better representation. Growing up I didn’t have celebrity role models who looked like me. My mom was my biggest role model because she embraced her figure and never spoke negatively about her body. I’m here to remind young girls, and even older women, to be their own role models, to be their favorite kind of woman.
Lindex is now expanding their size range to include larger sizes in their collections, rather than having a separate plus size section, what do you think about that?
I think it’s fantastic. I am not a fan of labels, and I strongly feel that the number on a clothing tag shouldn’t be used to define a woman.
How do you think style and fashion can empower women to look and feel great?
Confidence comes from the inside out, so first and foremost, you need to feel great about yourself internally. When a woman finds clothing that fits her perfectly and makes her feel great, that confidence shines on the outside.
How would you describe your personal style?
Feminine, classic, sophisticated, with a touch of sexy.
What style advice would you give girls with larger sizes?
Ignore the silly rules! Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Don’t feel like you “can’t wear white pants” because a magazine said so years ago. Always try on different sizes before you pass on something because you think it doesn’t fit. I always try on my size, the size smaller and the size larger.
What kind of relationship do you have to your own body?
It has taken me years to get to this point, but I can confidently say that I love my body, every part of it. Yes, I have my days where I feel less beautiful, but those are the days where I stand in front of the mirror and practice my affirmations. I look directly at the parts of my body I’m less comfortable with and say, “Hey cellulite, I see you! You’re taking over my thighs but that’s okay because I accept you.”
When do you feel at your best?
After I’ve gone to the gym and took a shower. I feel invincible!
What’s your beauty advice? Top three?
- Always keep your skin hydrated – moisturize from both the inside and outside.
- Wear sunscreen every day.
- Don’t wash your hair every day!
What are your favorite travel destinations and why?
Italy, I love to eat my way through the country.
What are you most happy about in your life?
The fact that I am not only blessed with a successful modeling career, but that I am making an impact on the lives of so many women, and even men, who call me their role model.
